More fun shoot pics

Ben took some pics at this months fun shoot. Sorry I haven't posted regularly, but I've been busting my hump making up for all the vacation time and preparing Ben and I for Nationals.Gary is the man in charge of the fun shoots. With his able sidekick Mark they do a heck of a job with them. They truly are fun. Low stress and interesting. Easy? No, not really.Greg J. was the overall winner this month. He shot a great score. When you hear someone say cops can't shoot tell them to come see me with their checkbook. I'll arrange a little one on one for them. This is some of the steel in pit 4. 7 to 20 yards. Those of us who shoot a lot of steel know how unforgiving it can be.This is the Red Dawn thing Gary mentioned. 6 innocent tomatoes at like 7 yards. Explosive with the right calibers and bullets. I'm glad Mark and Gary had to clean that mess up.Doing the scoring after the shoot. If you look at this picture carefully you can see who really does all the work at the fun shoots. It's not me.

Browning Hi-power for sale

Jay Lewis is selling his Hi-Power. Here is the pertinent info. Contact him directly if you are interested.

"Model and S/N: Browning Hi-Power 9mm with adjustable rear sights, S/N 245NX*****, wood grip panels, “Made in Belgium, Assembled in Portugal” on slide
Condition: Excellent. Cleaned after every use, finish is excellent. I can honestly rate this as “Like New in Box” in terms of cosmetics. Mechanically perfect.
Round count: 750 (est.) I am the second owner, and I don't think the woman who owned it before me put more than a box of ammo through it. I've only used WWB 115 FMJ for shooting, and never had a misfire or jam. I’ve had a few range sessions with it, and two fun shoots.
Included: Original box with matching end label, manual, two factory 13-round magazines, and a set of Pachmayr grips in their original box.
Asking price: $650. Cash only, no trades. I’ll include the FFL transfer fees and background check in this price, at my FFL in Red Lion.
If you know anyone who's interested, feel free to pass on the information. My phone is 717-741-0166, if someone wants to call me with any questions."

Sportsman and Family Festival

We will be hosting the First Annual IWLA Sportsman and Family Festival at York Izaak Walton on September 19th, 20th, and 21st. There will be many events that may interest you. These include the kids fishing pond, plug and fly casting contests, trap shooting, 3D archery, a fishing derby, bake sake, silent auction, dime pitch, a pellet gun shoot, and horseshoe tournaments. For more info check the clubs website at www.yorkiwla.org

The pistol committee wil be running "Ike's shooting gallery" on Saturday from 10:00am until 5:00pm and on Sunday from 10:00am until 2:00pm. This will entail a range with a wide array of target options where the shooter will pay for their ammunition and under our supervision, using our guns, shoot anything they like. I will need some volunteers to help me run this event. I will schedule the help I have throughout the weekend in an orderly manner. If you would like to help email me and we will discuss the options I have for you.

If you belong to the Izaak Walton you can help your club and have a good time showing others how great our sport is. Non-members may also volunteer.

The three front ranges will be closed from Saturday 9:00am until Sunday 3:00pm for this event.

Funshoot Reminder

This Saturday, Aug 23rd, is our monthly funshoot. Anyone who can safely handle a handgun may participate. Registration starts a 9:15am, and shooting at 10:00. You may use any pistol caliber handgun that holds a minimum of 6 rounds, and has a muzzle velocity less that 1500fps (it's unusual to be above that, so if you aren't sure, just ask me). Adults shoot for $15, and kids under 18 for $5. To be placed on an email list for more detailed info, or if you should have and didn't get a notice last night, drop me a line at iwlafunshoot1@comcast.net.

More Alaska pics

A mother moose and calf right along side the road across from Eilison Air Force base. We were stopped in the middle of the road and Kristy was just taking pictures right next to the "Do not stop, or take pictures sign". While she was taking pictures of the moose Ben and I were watching two F16s taxi out and take off side by side about 100 yards from us. It was really cool. It was also interesting that they had no markings on them and one was a woodland camo and the other was a blue and grey camo scheme. I know that is a big jet fighter training base where they dog fight.
Sea Lions we saw on our harbor cruise out of Seward. We also saw whales and seals and all kinds of marine life.
Ben and I at Exit Glacier. I cropped out the signs that say not to be where we are. We had to touch it.

August match results are up!

There were some technical difficulties. Welcome to the computer age, but the results are now available on our website. Or you can just click here.

Can anyone stop Greg J. from winning production? At least beat him on one stage? Am I going to have to dust off my production gear? I'm not sure it would do any good, but I might have to try after I get back from nationals.

Howard's back from Alaska

Sorry I missed the match, but I understand my crew did an excellent job in my absence. I would have expected nothing less. Alaska was everything I thought it would be, but a lot wetter. It rained everyday except the day we were leaving. Still we got a lot done and covered a a big part of our largest state. With the exception of Mt. McKinley we saw everything we went to see. The mountain was behind clouds and we were unable to see it from the ground, and the rain, clouds, and winds, caused our flightseeing tour with glacier landing to be cancelled. They say that you only have a 20% chance of seeing it. One guide told us she had seen it 3 times all summer. The scenery is amazing. This kind of thing is typical. You may notice a glacier in this picture. The things are everywhere.
This is a grizzly bear sow and cub we saw in Denali. Note that this picture was taken from the safety and comfort of our tour bus a long way away. I was unarmed the whole time we were there. We saw several Grizzlies, several moose, dozens of caribou and Dall sheep, a few golden eagles, a few bald eagles, a humpback wale, several beluga whales, some killer whales, and lots of sea lions and seals. I'll post some of those pictures later.
We sucessfully panned for gold. If you look real carefully you can see some flakes in the top left part of the pan. I think between the four of us we got about $40 worth, so we came home. It's not as easy as it looks in the movies. If we had struck it rich Gary might be your full time match director.

Another One in the Books

Well, it was a long day, almost 70 shooters and 8 stages, includng a couple of multistring classifiers. We only had one backup, and of course it lasted all day long. Thanks to all for sticking it out with the good attitudes and fun that I have come to love from this bunch. Also a big thanks to all the help we got this morning! Setup was not all that difficult, but it was done by 9:00, we basically sat around and stared at each other for almost an hour waiting for registration to close.

Scores should be available online at http://yorkiwlaipsc.org/matches08.htm in a day or two.

Many thanks to Dave for registration and squadding, and Dawn, our invaluable stats lady for hangin' tough this afternoon.

I only got off a couple of pics, but here they are. If anyone has some to share, send 'em to me at ghswope@comcast.net

Frederick taking on the house pit under the watchful eye of Bob.

Thanks to Dave, Paul and Jan for this one on 8, I asked them to make me something fun on pit 8, and they did! Nice little stage.

Shameless self promotion: Funshoot Aug 23; food of the month returns, with RED DAWN!

Cheers

August match

It's a little early but we're going to begin sign up for the August match. Please be sure to use yorksignup@gmail.com to sign up for this match. My personal email will not do it.

The August 10th match will be 8 stages and around 160 rounds. There will be 4 classifiers. They are 99-02, 99-24, 99-45 and 99-16. The match fee will be $30. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

After you sign up at yorksignup@gmail.com you will receive a confirmation email within a couple days. If you don't have a confirmation by match day something is wrong.

Also, this will be my last post for several days. I'm taking my family to Alaska for a vacation. I'll post upon my return. If we're lucky maybe Gary will post some while we're gone.

If you need something to read while I'm gone check out the clubs new improved website at www.yorkiwla.org We have a lot more to do at our club than you might realize.
