May Fun Shoot

Ok, I'm not the real Fun Shoot Match Director, and I'm sure he'll post the real Fun Shoot plug here in the next day or two, but I want to tell all you USPSA shooters something. I've been saying for years what a great thing the fun shoot is. That it helps us focus on sight in, and accuracy, and trigger skills, etc. This month there is an added bonus for the competitors signed up for the Mid-Atlantic Section Championship: The walls for the back 4 stages of the MASC are up. The steel is in place. Gary is going to embed these features into the May Fun Shoot. They won't be the stages we're going to use for the MASC, but they will have certain elements in common. At the very least you'll get an idea what the dimensions of the stages will be, and you'll be able to piscture the diagrams in the actual pits. You'll know exactly how far the steel is, and what the angles of engagement of the paper will likely be. There have been a few minor changes from the diagrams and they will be known ahead of time to those who either help set them up or shoot the Fun Shoot. I'm not telling you you'll have an unfair advantage, I'm just sayin...

Mid-Atlantic Section Championship

The Saturday afternoon time slot has been full for weeks now, and Sunday morning is now full too. There are a few slots available for Saturday morning, but the entry fee has increased to $100, and late entries don't get free t-shirts either. This year's shirts are very cool. It's more or less the same design we used the last two years, but this year we went with a monotone black imprint on military green shirts. Very tactical.

This might be considered bragging...

Tip of the day

Today as Greg and I were teaching a USPSA Basic Skills class we told the shooters something I want to remind all of you: The basic skills are the foundation of all the shooting we do. We all need to maintain these most elementary fundamentals and we do so only by practicing them diligently.

It may not seem sexy to practice the draw or reload dozens of times. You may think you're above repetitive movement exercises. Maybe transition drills bore you. Strong hand, weak hand, movers, the list of these basics goes on and on. But even the most complex stages are nothing more than a series of these simple skill tests strung together. A basic skill mastered is a tool. Whe you have enough tools in your tool box you can do anything. Start collecting these tools and when a stage requires a certain thing you'll have what you need.

Instead of spending your time practicing stages because they are more fun use your time to actually MASTER some of the basics. The very best in our sport aren't there because they know some secret tricks you don't. They are the best because they have mastered every imaginable basic skill. When it comes time to shoot a stage they use these very basic skill sets and weave them together like a composer does an symphony. They have practiced the simple things until they become AUTOMATIC. That is where the magic is.

I surprised everyone with a chronograph at our match last weekend. The primary purpose was to work all the bugs out for next month's Mid-Atlantic Section Championship, but the CED set-up was flawless and very easy to set up and run. We also wanted to just run it unannounced to make sure everyone was being honest. I caught a few people who were either still working on their loads or were trusting the books. Overall I think it was a positive experience for most people. A lot of shooters are right on the edge and now have a little more info to work with. I'm sure a lot of people will be bumping their powder measure up a tenth this week.

The Wounded Warrior Project

We have raised nearly $700 for the Wounded Warrior Project so far, mostly due to our charity match last weekend. Many thanks to those who contributed. We really believe helping our wounded veterans and their families is a worthwhile cause.

May USPSA match

The May USPSA match, SATURDAY, 5/7 will be a 7 stage pistol match with 4 classifiers. It will cost $30 with $10 per shooter going to the Wounded Warrior Project right of the top.

The match will start at 1:00pm.
